Where?

La Moskitia, Honduras is in the Gracias a Dios Department of Honduras, located in the heart of Central America. Completely isolated by jungle, La Moskitia is only accessible by boat, or small airplane. Due to this isolation, the region experiences a severe lack of resources and information, and has some of the highest poverty rates in Central America.

Who?

The Miskito Indians inhabit beautiful La Moskitia, along with several other indigenous tribes. Due to cultural traditions girls are rarely educated past 6th grade, and are often expected to only be house servants, and raise children. Project 541 operates 3 programs in order to target this problem at the source, and create sustainable solutions for the Miskito community.

Why?

Statistics show that when an educated girl earns income, she reinvests 90% of it back into her family. At Project 541 we believe in the power of a girl. We believe that a generation of educated and empowered girls, given the right tools, can change the social and economic landscape of La Moskitia.
